Aviation security, Privacy, Data Protection and Other Human Rights: Technologies and Legal Principles
This book sheds light on aviation security, considering both technologies and legal principles. It considers the protection of individuals in particular their rights to privacy and data protection and raises aspects of international law, human rights and data security, among other relevant topics. Technologies and practices which arise in this volume include body scanners, camera surveillance, biometrics, profiling, behavior analysis, and the transfer of air passenger personal data from airlines to state authorities.
Readers are invited to explore questions such as: What right to privacy and data protection do air passengers have? How can air passenger rights be safeguarded, whilst also dealing appropriately with security threats at airports and in airplanes? This book is the product of three disciplinary perspectives on aviation communication. We are fortunate to be able to collaborate with each other and to combine our differing areas of expertise, thus offering complementary perspectives from the disciplines of linguistics and applied linguistics, human factors and language testing. In order to give the reader an idea of the lenses through which we examine the phenomenon of Aviation English, it is worth providing a brief description of our individual trajectories and how this collaboration came about. Dominique Estival and Brett Molesworth are both pilots, with commercial pilot licences. Dominique is a linguist, with a background in theoretical linguistics, more specifi cally syntax and computational linguistics, and she is also a fl ight instructor. Brett is a psychologist, specializing in human factors, who lectures in the School of Aviation at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia. Dominique was one of the subjects in one of Brett’s early studies of factors impacting on pilot performance and they started a collaboration to study the effect of the use of a second language on miscommunication in aviation from the perspectives of human factors and linguistics. Candace Farris is an applied linguist, language tester and currently a doctoral candidate at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Dominique and Candace met when they both participated in the Featured Colloquium at the American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL) meeting, entitled ‘Language tests and language policy: The case of aviation English’ (Boston, 24–7 March 2012), organised by Tim McNamara. Quite independently, the design of Candace’s earlier experiments had inspired the design of Dominique and Brett’s fl ight simulator experiments.

|Advances in Aviation Psychology
Aviation remains one of the most active and challenging domains for human factors and applied psychology. Since 1981, the biennial International Symposium on Aviation Psychology (ISAP) has been convened for the purposes of (a) presenting the latest research on human performance problems and opportunities within aviation systems, (b) envisioning design solutions that best utilize human capabilities for creating safe and efficient aviation systems, and (c) bringing together scientists, research sponsors, and operators in an effort to bridge the gap between research and application. Though rooted in the presentations of the 17th ISAP, held in 2013 in Dayton, Ohio, Advances in Aviation Psychology is not simply a collection of selected proceeding papers. Based upon the potential impact on emerging trends, current debates or enduring issues present in their work, select authors were invited to expand on their work following the benefit of interactions at the symposium. The invited authors include the featured keynote and plenary speakers who are all leading scientists and prominent researchers that were selected to participate at the symposium. These contributions are supplemented by additional contributors whose work best reflects significant developments in aviation psychology. Consequently the volume includes visions for the next generation of air management and air traffic control, the integration of unmanned (i.e. remotely piloted vehicles) into operational air spaces, and the use of advanced information technologies (e.g. synthetic task environments) for research and training. This book is the first in a series of volumes to be published in conjunction with each subsequent ISAP. The aim of each volume is not only to report the latest findings in aviation psychology but also to suggest new directions for advancing the field.

Aeromedical psychology is that branch of psychology pertaining to the assessment, selection and evaluation of aviation personnel. This book, Aeromedical Psychology, is designed to provide the means for a variety of clinicians to carry out sound assessment and selection procedures, perform informed evaluations and make subsequent recommendations regarding flight status and treatment strategies geared to the aviation environment. To facilitate a dynamic understanding of the field, the book emphasizes an integration of applications and theory, case examples and research. The book is divided into three parts. The first presents assessment and selection procedures for aviation personnel (i.e. air traffic controllers, flight officers and pilots) and astronauts and the many ways in which both psychologists and psychiatrists are involved in these roles. Clinical issues unique to aviation – notably fear of flying, motivation to fly and airsickness – are addressed, as well as possible courses of intervention, treatment and disposition. In the well-established aviation system, the importance of sound human factors practice, based on good aviation psychology research, is obvious from those incidents and accidents resulting from its neglect. This carefully structured book presents an up-to-date review of the main areas in the field of Aviation Psychology. Although operational personnel in aviation are usually able to cope with stress more efficiently than other occupational groups, individual problems might develop as reactions to traumatic influences. Either a psychological evaluation or a proper treatment or both is then required as described in the ‘Clinical Psychology’ part of the book.
